Snowshoe HIKE

Summit a Snowy Peak for Splendid Views
Mid-December to Mid-April

ACTIVITY DATA

TOUR DESCRIPTION

The "satoyama", or lower-elevation local peaks, that dominate the landscape of Otari are fantastic for getting away from the crowds and exploring the best of the area's beautiful and abundant nature. The village's northerly location and unique geography ensure plenty of snow blankets the area's forested mountains during the winter season, which makes for excellent snowshoeing and even better views once you are above the treeline.

We can guide tours to the summits of several peaks in the area, with the location for each tour determined ultimately by current weather and snow conditions. Each climb will take us through quiet cedar and/or beech forests en route to rewarding panoramic vistas. We may cross paths with a few local backcountry skiers along the way, but it is very unlikely that we'll run into any other tourists.

On this full-day tour that begins bright and early, we will start our climb first thing in the morning for the best chance of clear views and the best snow conditions for snowshoeing, and also to ensure we are back down around lunch time.  The order is flexible, but after our hard-earned summit, we can eat lunch and drop by an onsen as the finale to a fantastic day.
